Launch of the 2025 snow crab season

The first crab boats are now in the water, marking the snow crab fishing season begins imminently. The first departure at sea is planned for Sunday, March 23 at 5 a.m. The first arrivals of live snow crab should be available from Monday, March 24 in Eastern Quebec, and we are waiting for our first arrival of live crab at La Mer on March 25 or 26!

Opening of fishing areas:

-Zone 17 should open on March 23.

-Zone 16 will open on March 27.

-Zone 12 will open on March 30.

Will prices rise this year?

Crab fishermen, producers and distributors will face several obstacles this year.

First, the reduction in quotas of up to 30% in several areas will affect the supply available on the market and therefore cause prices to rise in the first few weeks.

From March 20th, China is to impose 25% tariff on Canadian seafood, reducing a significant portion of export opportunities.
From the April 2, the US administration could also impose a 25% import tariff on Canadian products, which could jeopardize export volumes to the United States, one of the main markets for snow crab.

With less crab available due to the reduction in quotas, a rise in prices is expected for this 2025 season. However, the imposition of import tariffs by China, coupled with economic tension and the uncertainty of American tariffs, could eventually stabilize the price of crab.

In any case, crab lovers from eastern Quebec will be able to feast from Monday, March 24, but may have to expect higher prices than last year.
